There was a touch of fortune as Burns’ 80th-minute finish gave Kieron McKenna’s side a 3-2 success, with Joe Edwards ‘cross looping off Connor Ogilvie allowing the winger to apply the final touch from close range.

That cancelled out two Colby Bishop penalties, with Blues old boy Marcus Harness and Freddie Ladapo getting the other goals in front of a crowd of 28,424.

Ipswich dominated the first half but the second 45 minutes proved a more even affair.

But it’s the Tractor Boys who snared the points with 10 minutes to go, to leave Pompey fourth in the table.

The home side were the dominant force for the first 45 minutes, dominating possession and the shot count.

Conor Chaplin and Tyreece John-Jules miscued early openings before a Chaplin effort cannoned off the post, as the Pompey defence dallied.

Connor Ogilvie produced a fine block to deny Harness, but the goal was coming and arrived from the former Blues winger in the 25th minute, as he stuck away Chaplin’s through ball.

Cowley’s men responded superbly, however, as Dane Scarlett left Luke Woolfenden for dead in the 32nd minute and was hauled down by Christian Walton. Bishop did the rest from the spot, blasting his effort through the Ipswich keeper.

Pompey had to do something to stop the threat from the home side down both flanks.

But it was the Blues who first threatened after the restart, as Pack’s dipping, swerving 30-yard free-kick was punched away by Walton.

The second half was a more even affair with Pompey threatening in spells and dogged in defence.

But it was the home side who had the lead with 15 minutes left, as Davis’ cross was converted by sub Ladapo.

A crazy period then ensued as Ronan Curtis was fouled in the box by Sam Morsy and Bishop slotted home his spot kick,

But Ipswich instantly restored their lead, as Kyle Edwards’ cross looped up as Ogilvie challenged and Burns was there to apply the final touch at the back post.

And there was no way back through nine minutes of stoppage time on a day of disappointment for Pompey.
