We’ll, we asked the AI to name Pompey’s greatest starting XI since 2000 and this was how it responded.
‘Here is one possible starting XI for Portsmouth FC's greatest team since 2000.
‘This team includes several players who played key roles in Portsmouth's successful campaigns in the early to mid-2000s, including their FA Cup win in 2008.
David James was a stalwart in goal, while the backline featured the likes of Glen Johnson, Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin, and Hermann Hreidarsson.
In midfield, Pedro Mendes, Lassana Diarra, and Niko Kranjcar were all talented playmakers who could create chances and score goals, while up front Jermain Defoe, Nwankwo Kanu, and Yakubu Aiyegbeni provided plenty of firepower.’
Below is what AI said when we asked it to explain each player’s inclusion.
Also included is AI’s response when we asked why, for instance, Paul Merson, didn’t make the team?

9. Jermain Defoe - forward 1

'Kanu is widely regarded as one of Portsmouth FC's greatest strikers since 2000 due to his technical ability, vision, and contributions to the team during his time with the club. Kanu joined Portsmouth in 2006 on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion and quickly established himself as a key player in the team's attack. Kanu was a technically gifted striker who possessed excellent ball control and was known for his ability to create chances for himself and his teammates. He played a crucial role in Portsmouth's success, including their FA Cup win in 2008. In total, Kanu made 141 appearances for Portsmouth, scoring 30 goals. His technical ability and vision made him a valuable asset to the team, and he was widely respected by both teammates and fans.' Photo: Laurence Griffiths
'Yakubu was a natural goalscorer who possessed excellent pace, strength, and finishing ability. He scored 29 goals in 67 appearances for Portsmouth, including 16 goals in the 2004-2005 season, which helped the team finish in the top half of the Premier League.' Photo: Ben Radford
'Paul Merson was a talented player who made significant contributions to Portsmouth FC during his time with the club. However, there are several reasons why he might not be considered in Portsmouth's greatest XI since 2000. Firstly, Merson's time with Portsmouth was relatively short-lived compared to some of the other players who are considered in their greatest XI since 2000. He played for the club for just one season, in the 2002-2003 campaign, before leaving to join Walsall. Secondly, while Merson was a talented player and contributed to the team's success during his time with the club, there were other players who made more significant contributions to Portsmouth's achievements during the period since 2000. Players like Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin, and Lassana Diarra were instrumental in Portsmouth's FA Cup win in 2008 and their strong performances in the Premier League. Overall, while Merson was a talented player and contributed to Portsmouth during his time with the club, he may not be considered in their greatest XI since 2000 due to his relatively short time with the team and the exceptional performances of other players during that period.'
