But the Blues boss is adamant his attacking players have what it takes to break down opponents who park the bus at PO4, as his side are flooded with Fratton Park fixtures.

Jackett felt the Fratton faithful showed their paitience as they realised the challenge they faced against a stoic Shrewsbury outfit on Saturday and kept with their team.

Pompey eventually broke the resistance of the strugglers in the 64th minute and went on to seal a 2-0 victory to close the gap on the automatic promotion slots to four points.

The meeting with Sam Ricketts’ men was the first of a run of eight home games from 10 fixtures.

And Jackett believes the Shrews are unlikely to be the only side to adopt a safety-first approach in that run.

The Pompey boss feels his team’s fans have the foresight to realise such challenges lie ahead - and will back their players when it happens.

Jackett said: ‘I thought the crowd knew Shrewsbury have been a tough nut for us to crack over the past few years.

‘They are difficult games when they sit with a good defensive record and the size and power they have, they can nick the ball.

‘The crowd definitely stuck with the players. Then the game went up a level on the changes and the game opened up slightly.

‘Definitely (the crowd will be important). There has to be a good link between the crowd and the players.

‘We feel if we get it right and get our game right they will have confidence in us and get behind the players. Fratton Park’s famous for that.

‘The home record has been very good and built on that.

‘If you look at Shrewsbury’s season, just look at their goals for and against. It tells its own story of where they’ve been.

‘Coming to Fratton Park they can sit in a back five and they have size and power.

‘They have been tough for us to break down and they won’t be the first side to be like that here.’

Teams coming to Fratton Park with limited ambition has been a recurring theme in recent seasons, with Pompey often not quite having the ability to open them them down when that occurs.

There’s been plenty of home comforts this term, however, with the Blues unbeaten on their own patch in 15 league fixtures.

Jackett has confidence there is the attacking verve in his side to continue that positivity over the run they’ve now embarked on, if rivals put up a defensive wall to break down.

He said: ‘It’s a test (to break down defensive sides). We’ve got the players to do that definitely.

‘We shouldn’t be frightened of it and we have the forward players to do it.

‘If it settles into a pattern of selection, when we need to change we have the players to do it. That’s good.’
