Abdul Khalique, more commonly known as ‘Abdul the Steward’, is certain the Blues will celebrate promotion when football recommences.

The 48-year-old is the jovial face that greets many fans while manning the Fratton Park gate on match-days.

His uber-cheerful persona has an infectious impact on everyone he greets.

Even after a lacklustre defeat, his positive outlook lifts spirits.

Supporters haven't seen Abdul for more than five weeks, though, with the coronavirus crisis shutting down the season.

Pompey sit fourth in League One and are two points outside the automatic promotion places.

And while it appears likely this term will be completed behind closed doors, Abdul has told fans to remain patient as they will eventually be returning to Fortress Fratton in their droves.

And he is bullish Kenny Jackett’s men will be in the Championship when they do make it back to PO4.

He said: ‘Football is never going to go away. It is in our blood and the club is still here as strong as ever.

‘They’re doing amazing stuff by refurbishing (the North Stand) and making the facilities even better now.

‘When fans come back, they're going to come back to an amazing stadium.

‘Football isn’t going to go away and we're all going to get through this together so be positive. It will only be for a short period but we can get back stronger and better.

‘Of course we’re going to get promoted! There's no way that we’re not going to get promoted – you heard it from me first.

'I have total belief in our team and in our manager. We are Pompey and we're going up. It is in the lap of the gods and we can only do what we can do by winning our games.

‘We’re going to have blips but we are a club on the up. We have brilliant manager, owners, supporters and young kids coming through.

‘Let's not forget Claire Martin, who does amazing work with Pompey in the Community.

‘We have so many strands and assets and it’s an absolute pleasure being there.’

While Abdul is missing standing at the Fratton faithful and greeting supporters, he knows keeping everyone safe during the Covid-19 outbreak is paramount.

He added: ‘I love being on that gate and seeing all the fans coming in.

‘But the safety of our fans and keeping the NHS staff safe – because they are doing an amazing job – is the important thing.

'Everyone has got to pull together and do their bit. As Portsmouth supporters, we’re more than happy to do that.’
