Portsmouth want Aston Villa loanee to be a touchline terror

The Aston Villa winger recently returned from two months on the sidelines following minor knee surgery.

Making his comeback in the Checkatrade Trophy 3-2 success over Spurs Under-21s, it represented only the third outing of the 20-year-old's Fratton stay.

Still, Green's presence is scheduled for the remainder of the season, offering plenty of game time to demonstrate talents which remain highly-regarded.

Certainly Gallen has been impressed with the former England under-20 international, who he believes can be a wide threat down the left.

And Pompey's assistant boss is eager to see the attacker hogging the flank rather than cutting inside.

Gallen said: '˜If you look at Andre he's a fantastic athlete and what we want him to do here from an offensive part of the game is to create and score goals.

'˜On the whole we want him to be going down the outside a bit more rather than maybe coming inside, I feel coming inside lets teams off.

'˜You come inside and basically run into the back four.

'˜Whereas we want players going down the outside and pulling balls back, standing balls up at the far post, whipping crosses in '“ and we are looking for one-touch finishes off the back of that.

'˜We feel that will give us more goals and if you look at the goals we've been scoring recently, they have arrived from Ronan (Curtis) down the outside.

'˜Sometimes the player has to make his own decision and it's not quite right to go down the outside so that's fine, but on the whole that's what we are looking to do offensively.

'˜While, from a defensive point of view, we are looking for him to stay with his full-back, not get beaten and not let his full-back get the other side of him ever and get any crosses in.

'˜I think Andre's got the athleticism to do both sides of the game '“ and we are looking for him to do that.'

Green opened the scoring during his 65-minute comeback game in the Checkatrade Trophy earlier this month.

With Pompey subsequently having a blank weekend, the winger has continued to work hard on the training ground '“ and is in the frame for Saturday's visit to Scunthorpe.

Gallen added: '˜In the first half against Spurs, Andre got down the outside and put in one particularly great cross, while there was also an early shot after he had cut in.

'˜I'm not saying he shouldn't do that, in the league games it's different, you come inside and players go out to block you, but I think he has the ability to go both ways, which is what we want.

'˜We don't want him too isolated on the touchline, especially if it's a goal kick or a pass that's coming from the back four forwards, we want him up around Oli like a narrow front three at times.

'˜Let's say if he starts off as a sub, there'll be games at home which are going to be tight and we need some game changers.'
