And the midfielder is confident he can help eradicate the costly goals of last season from the Blues' game.

Naylor continued an impressive start to his career at Fratton Park with another combative showing at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old feels he's able to bring his attributes to the table in front of Pompey's back four.

He said: '˜I know my role in the side now. I try my best in every game to put myself about and break up play.

'˜I will put my foot in when I need to put my foot in. The boys are always talking behind me and that makes my life easier.

'˜You can't afford to concede sloppy goals. Hopefully we're able to take that out of our game and be solid.

'˜We need to make sure we're solid and shut things up in key times of the game.'

Naylor earned plaudits for an outsanding last-ditch tackle to deny James Henry an open goal against Oxford last Saturday.

The arrival from Burton played down the quality of his intervention.

He added: '˜I just the read the game and I knew what was going to happen. If it was going to hit the post it was going to bounce into the box.

'˜I had to make the challenge and get it right, otherwise I was going to give away a penalty and get sent off. It was well-timed and I'm glad I stopped a goal.

'˜I'm there to put my foot in like that and read the game. If I can read the game like I did on Saturday I'll take that all day long.'
