Record post-war low crowd for Blues

POMPEY last night claimed an unwanted record by shattering their lowest post-war attendance at Fratton Park.

Just 1,355 turned up to watch a 2-2 draw with Reading under-23s in the much-maligned Checkatrade Trophy.

The figure, which includes 133 travelling Royals supporters, beat the 2,318 recorded against Bristol City in the Anglo-Italian Cup in August 1993.

The Blues had anticipated a low turnout, opting not to open the Fratton End, North stand or Milton end.

There was late interest, however, with supporters queuing down Frogmore Road from 45 minutes before kick-off for the match against Martin Kuhl’s youngsters.

Yet that didn’t prevent Pompey seeing a drop of 92 per cent from the crowd of 16,950 which attended Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Doncaster Rovers.
