Reds aim to kick on after Newport triumph

The Reds lost 1-0 at Moneyfields on Tuesday and then returned from a wet Newport last night with a 3-2 win.

Ashley Tattersall gave the visitors a 32nd-minute lead as he fired in after a Sean Howe corner.

Newport hit back to equalise four minutes later when Liam Triggs volleyed home.

Tattersall restored the Reds lead in the 57th minute with a terrific strike from the edge of the area.

And 10 minutes later Simon Woods scored from close range to stretch the Reds’ lead.

Fareham were left hanging on, though, as Newport reduced the arrears 11 minutes before full-time.

Horndean couldn’t prevent Salisbury being crowned champions as they slipped to a 3-0 away defeat in front of a large crowd of more than 760 spectators last night.

After a goalless first half, the home side took charge with two goals in six minutes either side of the hour mark.

A third goal 10 minutes from full-time confirmed the Whites as champions.

Horndean will hope to get back to winning ways at Hamworthy United as they continue their push for a top-six finish tomorrow.

Graham Rix is looking for AFC Portchester to maintain their momentum as they travel to Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

The Royals cruised to a 5-0 win at Alresford Town and although the chance of promotion has gone, Rix wants his side to finish as high as they can.

‘We were back somewhere near our best at Alresford – keeping a clean sheet and taking our chances,’ he said.

‘The challenge has been laid down to the players who all want to play in our Russell-Cotes Cup final.

‘We will need to produce a similar performance because Bemerton are always a tough proposition.’

Moneyfields also face an awkward task against Fawley on the Waterside.

The Copnor club were nowhere near their best against Fareham on Tuesday.

‘The pitch at Fawley is not the biggest and not conducive to the prettiest football,’ said Moneys boss Dave Carter.

‘At the moment we are creating lots of chances without putting them away.

‘We have taken 10 points from our last four games and cemented our place in the top 10.

‘It is important we don’t let that slip – particularly as we meet the league leaders Salisbury next week.’
