Teams to kick off in battle against cancer

Organisors of the annual Football For Cancer event have announced that it will be returning to the area at the end of this month.

The event has seen enormous success in recent years – last year’s event raised a total of just under £55,000. Money was then donated to Tom Prince Trust, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Macmillan Cancer Support, Naomi House & Jack’s Place and The Rowans Hospice.

The teams at the event are named in memory of those who have sadly lost their battle with cancer.

On Thursday, March 30, team Matt Hartt will kick off against team Isobelle Harley, at 7.45pm at Kendall Stadium, Eastern Road, Portsmouth.

On Friday, April 7, two teams named after lost service personnel will kick off at AFC Portchester. Adrian ‘Spud’ Slater will play against Mark ‘Amo’ Hampson – plenty of ex-servicemen are expected to be in attendance, in what the event organisers say will be an ‘emotional evening’.

The final two games will take place on Sunday, April 9, at Love Lane Stadium in Petersfield.

FFC board trustee Gavin Stockley said: ‘We are confident that 2017 will the year that we break through the £500,000 barrier of total funding raised – which isn’t too bad, considering we’ve only been around for nine years.

‘We are looking forward to kicking off another tournament imminently, and would like to welcome all supporters, new and old, to come and join our family, as we aim to continue our fight together to tackle cancer and raise awareness and much needed funding ready to be shared in our local community with families, when they are faced with going through the toughest of times.’
