Pompey are now unbeaten from their opening nine league games this season.

In doing so, they equal a post-war feat achieved four times previously '“ but short of the 1948-49 record of 13.

The 2002-03 Division One title campaign was one of those instances.

Pompey 2 Nottingham Forest 0

Harry Redknapp handed debuts to seven players for the first match of the season, with Deon Burton and Vincent Pericard scoring before half-time to claim the victory.

Sheffield Utd 1 Pompey 1

Burton maintained his scoring run by netting a first-half equaliser to cancel out Peter Ndlovu's opener for the Blades.

Palace 2 Pompey 3

Inspired half-time substitutions saw the Blues fight back from 2-0 down to claim victory.

Jason Crowe was among two players introduced from the bench at the interval and the right-back responded with two goals, Hayden Foxe grabbing the other.

Pompey 3 Watford 0

A return of three goals in seven minutes either side of half-time gave the hosts a comprehensive victory over the Hornets.

Paul Merson's penalty, followed by goals from Svetoslav Todorov and Burton settled the occasion.

Grimsby 0 Pompey 1

Substitute Mark Burchill volleyed home an 85th-minute winner to claim a dramatic victory at Blundell Park.

Pompey 4 Brighton 2

Despite Matt Taylor's early opener, Pompey slipped behind 2-1 against Brighton.

But Merson's penalty, Todorov and Crowe completed the fightback to maintain their top-of-the-table placing.

Gillingham 1 Pompey 3

Merson, Burchill and substitute Gary O'Neil registered for dominant Pompey, with Kevin Jones pulling back a consolation on 70 minutes for the home side.

Pompey 1 Millwall 0

The Blues made it seven wins and a draw from their opening eight games.

Todorov was the match winner, converting Nigel Quashie's pass, before later limping off with a knee injury.

Pompey 4 Wimbledon 1

Neil Shipperley had cancelled out Pericard's opener before Redknapp's men galloped away.

Todorov, Mark Williams' own goal and Taylor completed the emphatic scoreline.
