‘There's loads more to come’ insists Hawks boss Doswell after seven wins in nine games in 2020/21

The Hawks have yet to hit the heights this season in terms of complete performances.

That's the verdict of boss Paul Doswell despite seeing his squad win seven of their opening nine matches in all competitions this term - four of those wins coming in the FA Cup.

He has seen glimpses of what his players can do at the peak of their powers only in short spells.

But he wants them to produce it as a collective across the full 90 minutes of matches moving forward as they bid to mount another National League South title challenge.

Hawks make the trip to a resurgent Welling United side, who are unbeaten in three National League South fixtures, on Saturday.

‘There’s loads more to come,' admitted Doswell.

‘We had seven first-team players out for the whole of pre-season. We’re just getting to those being properly match-fit now.

‘The new squad has had to get to know each other but the lads, give them credit, have found ways to win whilst not playing at our best.

‘It’s never a bad thing to win when you’re not playing great.

'We’ve played well but only in halves or in spells and we haven’t put together - what I’d call in my mind - a Havant & Waterlooville performance.

‘We’ve got high standards and it’s not just winning, it’s winning knowing that you’ve won because of a reason.

‘I just feel recently ... I know we’re not quite right, and we’re working hard on the training pitch to get that right.'

Doswell took training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday this week and will be back in the dugout at Welling after missing the win over Oxford City last weekend because of illness.

Danny Kedwell, who was also ruled out last weekend through illness, is expected to return to the starting line up against the Wings.

The former Gillingham favourite starred in the victory against Dulwich Hamlet earlier this month, his first after rejoining for the club.

‘I think the Dulwich game, certainly that second half, was a really good 45 minutes for us, and Danny gives us that ability up front to keep and retain the ball,' the boss explained.

‘He’s very, very clever in his flicks.

‘Wrighty (Tommy Wright) and Iaciofano (Joe) will really feed off him throughout the season.

‘It was important to get him back in. We didn’t want him to go in the first place.'
