Tierney and Scott star as Baffins Milton end two-month wait for Wessex League victory in rare home appearance

Baffins Milton Rovers enjoyed the winning Wessex League feeling for the first time in two months with a 2-0 win against Hamble Club at the PMC Stadium.

Manager Steve Leigh was relieved to see his team end a run of just one point from five games since a 3-2 success at Fleet Town on December 7.

'It was good to get three points and sometimes that's the most important thing in the game,’ said Leigh after what was only Baffins’ second home league fixture since the end of October.

'Forget the performance, especially when results have not been going our way.

'We were better in the first half and the visitors pressed us more in the second half.

'Although we rode our luck at times, we got the win.

'We can take some good positives from the game and move forward as a group.'

That Baffins won was partly down to the brilliance of Tommy Tierney and goalkeeper Cameron Scott.

Tierney opened the scoring with a wonder goal and Scott ensured his side recorded a clean sheet - only Baffins’ fifth in 22 league games with others coming against strugglers Shafesbury (twice), Bournemouth and Amesbury.

Baffins, with former Fareham defender Tom Froggatt making his debut, started well but had to wait late into the first half before taking the lead

The tenacious Tierney opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a great goal.

Having won possession on the left, he cut inside, dazzled the defence and finished off by firing into the far corner of the goal.

After the break Scott made a double stop before pulling off an unbelievable save down low at his near post.

The game was all but sealed in the 83rd minute when Dale Mason found Tommy Scutt, whose cross was converted at the second attempt by Jamie White.

Eight of Baffins’ next nine games are scheduled to take place at the PMC Stadium – starting with this Wednesday’s much-delayed Wessex League Cup tie with Brockenhurst. The winners are home again in the quarter finals, to AFC Stoneham.
