Top scorer Danny on target again as Denmead extend winning Hampshire Premier League run

Paul Goddard believes Denmead are timing their push to seal a second-placed finish in the Hampshire Premier League Division second tier to perfection.

Danny Lucas' 59th-minute strike - his 15th of the season - made it seven league wins on the spin against Headley at the weekend.

The latest success helped Denmead open up a six-point gap between themselves and third-placed Andover New Street Swifts, though they have played two games more.

They still have to face each other - at Front Lawn on March 7 - as they battle to finish second behind likely champions Moneyfields.

‘We’re coming good at the right time with five games to go,’ said Goddard, whose team were playing in the Meon Valley Sunday League last season.

‘We’ve opened up a six-point gap on Andover but they’ve got two games in hand.

‘At this stage of the season I’d rather have points on the board.

‘Being realistic, Moneyfields are head and shoulders above the rest.

‘We’ve got some really important league games to potentially secure second place.'

It appears a straight fight between Denmead and Swifts for what could be a second promotion place.

South Wonston are nine points behind Denmead in fourth, while fifth-placed Broughton have 10 fewer points with two games in hand.

‘I can’t really see anyone else getting up there,' added Goddard.

‘Realistically, it looks between ourselves and Andover.’

Denmead keeper Prad Bains has now kept five clean sheets in his last six league games.

Denmead’s seventh win was a walkover when Netley Central failed to raise a side for their visit to Front Lawn on December 7.
