Where did Pompey's We're On Our Way anthem come from?

But few might realise that We’re On Our Way was originally penned by a Broadway songwriter.

It was first picked up by Pompey fans during the win at Crawley on Tuesday last week and sung repeatedly again during victories at Colchester last Saturday and at home to Grimsby on Tuesday night.

Before that, versions have been taken up by, among others, fans of Leicester City, Bournemouth, FC Halifax Town, Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday, whose supporters were filmed singing the song in May of last year.

But the song - actually called I’m On My Way - originates not from a football ground but from the hit Western musical Paint Your Wagon.

The 1969 film starring Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, and Jean Seberg was adapted from the 1951 musical of the same name by Lerner and Loewe.

It is set in a mining camp during the Californian Gold Rush. I’m On My Way, sung by the chorus, opens and closes the film.
