Williams: Inspirational Mr Pompey Ladies was the nicest guy I've ever met

A one-minute silence will be held for all FA Women’s Premier League matches on Sunday in tribute.

It shows how highly regarded Coyle was for his service to ladies’ football and to Pompey.

Chairman Williams took over from Coyle who was involved with the Blues for more than 25 years in many roles and lost his long battle with cancer on Tuesday.

His dedication, commitment and hard work helped the team win titles and helped to build a side who deserved a place in the FA Women’s Super League.

Williams said: ‘It was devastating news.

‘He was the nicest guy I have ever met.

‘It’s so sad. I have known him for two years and we got close because of Pompey Ladies.

‘He made such an impression on me.

‘There will be a minute silence at every FA Women’s Premier League match on Sunday in his honour.

‘He got the outstanding contribution to our sport award at the FA Women’s Football Awards ceremony and when I took over as chairman we made him honorary life president.

‘Dave is a tough act to follow, he’s Mr Pompey Ladies.

‘That sums it up. After I became chairman he was still involved.

‘He was also a keen Pompey fan.

‘I took him to Fratton Park before the end of last season in the directors’ box.

‘It was a lovely experience for him.’

Everyone involved with Pompey Ladies past and present will have the chance to pay a fitting tribute to Coyle on Sunday when the Blues host West Ham at Gosport Borough FC (2pm).

Williams added: ‘His family will be there on Sunday along with some of the former players and officials.

‘It will be an emotional occasion. I feel very emotional. Dave kept us going and showed us you don’t give up on something.’

A statement from the Pompey Ladies board read: ‘Dave was held in very high regard by all in the women’s football community and that is evident in the tributes we have received in all forms of communication since the sad announcement.

‘All FA Women’s Premier League matches on Sunday will observe a minute’s silence in his honour.

‘The beautiful game has lost a beautiful person and we will miss him.’
