Steven Mullaney led Nottinghamshire’s rearguard action with 137 from 277 deliveries but in the end Brad Wheal stole the show with a career-best six for 51.

Hide AdThe Hampshire paceman, 19, said: ‘It’s special to get figures like that on such an important day for us in terms of our season and it’s great to get wickets for the team.
‘It was such a great feeling walking off the field knowing we had done all we can when it was needed.’
Hampshire leapfrogged Nottinghamshire into eighth place in the top-flight table.
However, they are still 16 points short of safety with four games remaining.
Mullaney, meanwhile, was left crestfallen.

Hide AdThe Nottinghamshire opener said: ‘I’d gladly swap the hundred for a duck in both innings and not get beaten like that.
‘We’ve got four games left and it’s time to start doing instead of saying.
‘We keep saying, game after game, but it’s time for harsh realities and we need to start fronting up.
‘We’re very disappointed and we have to play better or we’re in division two next season, it’s as simple as that.’
