Former Hampshire star Danny Briggs closing in on T20 wickets milestone

Former Hampshire spinner Danny Briggs is closing in on becoming only the third Englishman to bag 200 T20 wickets.

The 29-year-old is currently experiencing his first ever taste of Australian Big Bash League cricket with the Adelaide Strikers.

He bagged 2-17 off four overs yesterday as the Strikers dismissed Melbourne Renegades for 111 to win by 60 runs.

Briggs - who won the last of his seven England T20 caps in January 2014 - has now taken seven wickets in his seven BBL games at 22.14, hoisting his career total to 191.

The only English-qualified pair to have taken more are his Sussex colleagues Chris Jordan (225) and Ravi Bopara (234).

Briggs bagged 119 T20 wickets for Hampshire after making his debut for the county in their trophy-winning 2010 campaign. Only Chris Wood (137) has taken more.

In his six seasons at the Ageas Bowl, Briggs helped Hampshire to the T20 Finals Day every single year.

Since 2016, the Isle of Wight-born player has appeared for Sussex.

Briggs has taken more English T20 Blast wickets than anyone else - 172 - at 21.35. Wood is ninth highest with 130.

Their former Hampshire colleague, Glenn Maxwell, is enjoying a good BBL with the bat.

The Melbourne Stars skipper is third in the runscorers list after belting 255 in his opening six innings at 51.00.

In typical Maxwell style, he hasn’t scored them slowly - his strike rate is 151.61.

He struck a 37-ball 70 against Hobart and followed that up with an unbeaten 71 off 47 deliveries against the Sydney Sixers.

Hobart’s Ben McDermott - son of ex-Australian Test bowler Craig - is the top scorer with 277 runs from six innings at 55.40.
