Promotion bid boosted as City crush Andover

AN IMPRESSIVE performance saw City of Portsmouth Ladies boost their promotion bid with a 5-1 win away at Andover.

City took the lead when a pass under the arm from Lauren Stewart teed up captain Katie Spooner who netted.

Becky Clay planted the second goal into net.

In the second half Stewart made it 3-0 before Andover took advantage to claim a consolation goal.

City stepped it up again after conceding and Spooner bagged her second from a well-worked short corner.

Emily Butcher got the fifth goal with a cracking strike.

Captain Spooner praised new recruit Sarah Beaumont who she believes will have a bright future with the club.

She said: ‘Sarah Beaumont, who recently joined the club, and she had a great game and will be an asset to the team.

‘Player of the match was awarded to Sarah Bamford for her great defending skills.’

City of Portsmouth ladies second team lost 3-1 to Eastleigh.

Jemma Gard scored the goal for Portsmouth, while player of the match was awarded to Laura Burden.

A great team effort saw City of Portsmouth men’s first team beat Southampton University 1-0 in Hampshire League division one at Furze Lane.

The goal was scored when Seb Martin set up the unmarked Luke Parsons to sweep home.

Coach Chris Wimshurst was delighted with the team spirit and composure.

The men’s second team boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with a 2-1 win at Yateley seconds in division three.

Forward Martin King scored twice for City.

Stand-in captain David Johns said: ‘This was one of those games we could easily have won 7-0 if we’d been more clinical.

‘But the important thing is we dug in, never gave up, and got the three points.’

City men’s thirds lost 4-2 at Camberley & Farnborough thirds in division six.

George Berks and James Stephenson got the goals, while Dave Thomas was named man of the match.

The City men’s stars beat Trojans sixth team 5-0 in division 10.

Skipper Paul Barnes hit a hat-trick, with Tristan Barnes and Ben Heyward also netting.
