University of Chichester '˜saddened' by death of student

A '˜popular' student at the University of Chichester has died following a short illness.

Second-year student Joe Sharpe passed away after being taken to St Richard’s Hospital last week, the university confirmed, expressing its sadness.

Daniel Potter, programme leader for the Football Coaching and Performance degree, said: “Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and close friends at this difficult time.

“We will remember Joe as a popular, confident, and cheeky young man who was fanatical about all things football – including his favourite team Wolves.”

The 20-year-old, from Felixstowe, Suffolk, had been studying a BSc Football Coaching and Performance degree.

Luke Sheavyn, president of men’s football, said: “We have a close-knit community here at Chichester and have all been affected by Joe’s death.

“He was passionate about football and was usually seen playing right-back.

“He was always willing to lend his time to others, whether as a student rep or coach for Chichester City’s Women’s Team, which was a testament to his loving personality.”

The university and its Students’ Union have set aside a goalmouth on its football pitch as a memorial, where flowers and tributes can be laid.

People are also being invited to contribute to a book celebrating Joe’s life.
