Vernon dealt injury blow in Olympic bid

The athlete, from Fareham, had been hoping to prove his credentials to Great Britain’s Olympic selectors as he battles to secure a place on the plane to Rio.

Unfortunately, the injury-plagued athlete, saw a foot complaint put an end to his chances of competing in Amsterdam this evening.

The 30-year-old knew he needed to prove his form and fitness with time running out to earn a place on the British team to go to Brazil.

And having seen his hopes of 5,000m selection for Rio dashed at the trials in Birmingham the 10,000m silver and 5,000m bronze medallist at the Europeans in Zurich two years ago, now looks set to miss out on both events this summer,

Vernon has the Olympic qualifying standard of 28 minutes exactly from last May but his lack of form may now count against him in the eyes of the selectors.
