Portsmouth's Coffee Jingle Records puts out album in aid of The Sophie Lancaster Foundation

The 25-track album is in aid of the SOPHIE Lancaster Foundation, which is named after the 20-year-old music fan who was beaten to death in 2007 by a gang who didn’t like the way she dressed.

The charity’s aims are summed up in the acronym of her name – Stamp out prejudice, hatred and intolerance everywhere.

The album was put together by Coffee Jingle Records, which was co-founded by Martin Wake, from Copnor in Portsmouth. Martin first approached the charity with the idea when he set up the label two years ago.

Martin said: ‘Back then I didn’t know what I was doing, and I needed to finish my university course before I could give it my full attention.

‘I asked loads of local bands and a few bigger bands, when some of them said yes, I asked a few more and it just got bigger and bigger.

‘I set up two or three lists – one was the ideal one, Marilyn Manson was nearly on there, apparently he said yes, but his management said no.

‘A few asked for money, which defeats the object.

‘But we had lots who said yes, which was great.

‘I’m going to try and keep pushing it over the next 18 months, and fingers crossed it will keep growing over that time.’

Acts on the album include Cradle of Filth, Devilment, DiElle and System of Hate.

Dani Filth, frontman of metal legends Cradle of Filth and Devilment, who are both on the album, said: ‘We’re particularly proud – both in Cradle Of Filth and Devilment – of being involved in this charity record, as it is without question an awesome monument to the great work that SOPHIE does challenging prejudices and intolerance towards people from alternative subcultures.

‘It is also an honour to be among such a rich variety of musical maestros both signed and unsigned, bands that provide the legacy of Sophie Lancaster, whose life was cut short so unnecessarily, with such a fitting and poignant epitaph.

‘And one that hopefully people – just as precious as her – will enjoy and take comfort from all over the world.

‘Everyone who reads this should buy this album. If not for the varying forms of music that are on offer here, but for the cause that stands resolute behind them, making a real difference for everyone who believes in freedom of expression.’

Popular Nottingham-based metallers, Evil Scarecrow, donated their track Flight of The Dragons. Frontman Dr Hell added: ‘The horrible death of Sophie Lancaster touched our community deeply.

‘We have always been behind the SOPHIE foundation so were, of course, thrilled to be asked to be part of an album to raise money for the charity.

‘You should buy it, even if you skip our ropey track about flying dragons.’

Coffee Jingle also hosted a fundraising gig for the charity at the Edge of The Wedge in Southsea last week and hope to put on more in the future.
