Review: Tell Me On A Sunday at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton

That one woman alone sold it for me. Having seen her flawless performance as Calamity Jane in 2014, I vowed I’d always watch anything if Jodie Prenger was in it. As predicted, she didn’t disappoint.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical centres on Emma, a lonely British woman seeking love in New York. Prenger’s perfect diction and wonderful tone effortlessly sailed through the likes of Take that Look Off Your Face, Capped Teeth and Caesar Salad and of course, the titular track.

The second half was a question and answer session in which Prenger’s personality really shone with her quick wit and funny anecdotes. Asked about her Nancy role when she was crowned the winner of the BBC’s I’d Do Anything, she quipped: ‘I tried out for Joseph but it didn’t work out, turns out the loin cloth doesn’t go well with spanks!’

Along with understudy Jodie Beth Meyer, the pair performed a rendition of Another Suitcase in Another Hall from Evita.

Closing the show with Unexpected Song, I still remain convinced that Jodie Prenger is one of the finest musical theatre talents in the UK, showing there really is still a place for reality television talent shows.
