THIS WEEK IN 1983: Youngsters win national chess title

The county’s under-18 team took the national title after they squeezed in by the narrowest of margins to justify the faith of organisers Pat McEvoy and Terry Hollington

It was they who, in 1979, made the controversial decision to build a team for the future.

Out went some of the county’s best players and in came juniors who were expected to peak in 1983.
