Kirk Brandon at The Dockyard Club, Southsea REVIEW
Tucked away in the back streets of Southsea is the little known Dockyard Club. It's a true working men's club that has a great hall, which saw the return of the post-punk hero to the city, to a packed room '“ clearly word got around about his last show.
He's with Sam Sansbury on cello, which is something on paper you don't think will work, but Sansbury's haunting, melancholic backing is oddly compelling alongside Brandon's soaring vocals, which again appear to be in fine shape.

Hide AdAppropriately enough in tonight's venue, Brandon recounts the tale of his father, serving in the navy and his secret post-war role culminating in the emotional song Enigma. It's quite possibly the highlight of the evening.
Following an imperious version of Brandon's biggest hit, Westworld, from his Theatre of Hate days, his fans are on their feet with a rousing standing ovation, eventually persuading Sam and Kirk back for an equally brilliant Original Sin.
