Painters work on Portsmouth to be turned into stories

Writers will be reading work inspired by the paintings of Edward King.

The 14 authors will be re-imagining historical Portsmouth and exploring links between mental health, storytelling and art.

Known for his paintings of St James’ Hospital grounds, Edward was commissioned by the mayor to paint scenes of the Second World War bomb damage to Portsmouth.

Admired by his contemporaries, King faded into obscurity, perhaps because of the stigma of his mental illness.

The readings are on May 27 at New Theatre Royal, on Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth.
