Important work carried out on the Eastern Road bridge has lead to the closure on part of the busy carriageway.

Many motorists appear to be unhappy with the ongoing roadworks - now in its second consecutive weekend.

The southbound carriageway of Eastern Road was closed from 9pm last night until around 6am this morning.

One lane is open before closing again at 4pm this afternoon and remaining shut until 5am on Monday.

The closure is between Anchorage Park and the Eastern Road roundabout.

The northbound carriageway will be reduced to one lane during the same periods and in the same area.

Portsmouth City Council has contacted Colas to carry out the work.

On social media readers have expressed their annoyance regards the closure.

Neil Nutbeam wrote on Facebook: ‘Why are they doing it on a Saturday again?

‘The council is so stupid.’

Jayson Toole wrote to his partner saying: ‘No going to town for you then baby.’

Meanwhile, others are more optimistic with the works this weekend.

Karen McVicar says: ‘Well done Colas better organisation this weekend especially at the roundabout at the top of the Eastern Road.

‘Hoping my journey home is as smooth.’
