Fro iconic landmarks to beloved eateries, we were met with hundreds of responses from local people who shared why they feel Portsmouth stands out from other cities across the country. Here are 13 things that make Portsmouth special, according to readers of The News.
5. The New Theatre Royal
Portsmouth is home to a number of iconic theatres, including The New Theatre Royal in Guildhall Walk. One commenter said: "New Theatre Royal. A Grade 2* listed theatre designed by two of Britain’s most famous C19th architects - Charles Phipps and Frank Matcham". Photo: Google Street View
6. Birthplace of Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum allows visitors to explore the first home of one of the UK's most celebrated authors. Dickens was born at the Portsmouth address - now 393 Commercial Road - more than 200 years ago. Photo: Portsmouth City Council
7. Travel on the Hovercraft
While the Hovercraft is a common sight in Portsmouth, the service is unique as it is the worlds only year-round commercial passenger hovercraft service. The Isle of Wight has plenty of sights to see but the journey there can be part of the fun with a crossing taking just ten minutes. Photo: petert2 - stock.adobe.com
8. Solent forts
Spitbank Fort, Horse Sand Fort, St Helens Fort and No Mans Land Fort are a facinating glimpse into the city's history. They were commissioned by former prime minister Lord Henry Palmerston to protect Portsmouth Harbour from attack. Photo: Marcin Jedrysiak
