Bid to cut number of deaths in the water

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and the RNLI will be at West Beach in Hayling Island from 10am to 3pm on Saturday.

They are trying to reduce the number of water-related deaths.

Last year Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service was called out to 89 animal rescues from water, in some cases owners had also gone in to try to save their pet.

Information about the dangers will be on hand for walkers, runners, cyclists and dog owners.

It comes as the Chief Fire Officers Association’s Drowning Prevention and Water Safety week is on until May 1.

The RNLI’s community incident reduction manager, Keith Colwell, said: ‘We’re delighted to be working with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service to deliver essential water safety advice. We’re offering an engaging and interactive day out which could save your or your family’s life.’
