HUNDREDS of pounds has been raised to help a pub make repairs after a car drove into it.

Kind Sharlene Bland started the fundraising page for the George and Dragon, in Portsmouth, following the incident last week.

It was first thought the pub, which is run by landlord Vladimir Nasadovich, was structurally unsafe because of the crash but it has since been declared safe. Repairs are needed to the outside and inside.

So far £450 has been raised, almost reaching the £500 target.

Writing on the Just Giving page, Sharlene said: ‘Wow, thank you all so much for your very kind donations.

‘I’m sure this will go some way to repairing the damage and Vlad and his family will be so very grateful.

The power of community strikes again. Well done all and thank you again.

As previously reported in The News, the vehicle is understood to have been travelling down Washington Road, in Buckland, when the crash happened at 2.37am on Easter Monday.

Sharlene added: ‘In Portsmouth we have pubs closing down almost daily.

‘Let’s not let another one go through no fault of its owner.

‘Vladimir and his family have spent years making one of the only pubs in the area a friendly, calm drinking experience. He has done great things with this pub and doesn’t deserve this.’

Following the incident, residents spoke of their shock.

Peter McKay, 37, of Hanway Road said: ‘I was sleeping in my bed when I heard this huge bang. I didn’t know what it was. It was a loud crunch.

‘Then when I got out in the morning I saw this car that had ploughed into the wall.’
