Emergency drivers are '˜vulnerable to prosecutions'

THE man who represents rank-and-file police has said 999 drivers are vulnerable to prosecution.

John Apter, Hampshire Police Federation chairman, said emergency drivers have little protection from the law.

His comments come after Mark Aldred QC said there was no exemption under dangerous driving law for drivers.

Mr Apter said: ‘Officers must have better protection, it’s not a lot to ask. This isn’t about allowing 999 drivers to act with impunity, but there must be a balance. At the moment the balance is skewed against the emergency driver.’
