RUBBISH collectors saw an increase in litter following the good weather on Tuesday.

Since Monday, friends and families have been able to meet in open spaces – so long as they abide by the government’s ‘rule of six rule’.

Unseasonably warm weather in March has seen people flock to the coast, with hundreds of people taking to Southsea Common and the Eastney’s promenade.

And with the increased numbers of people heading outside, Portsmouth City Council has warned that the level of rubbish left at the coast increased.

On Wednesday a council spokesman told The News: ‘Due to the weather and numbers on the seafront yesterday, we did see an increase in levels of waste this morning.

‘However, we've already put out a greater number of bins across the seafront to help with waste disposal linked to increased footfall, and the majority of individuals have made use of these additional bins.

‘These, along with any remaining waste on the ground, were emptied and cleaned up first thing this morning.’

As part of the opening easing of lockdown rules people can now meet outside – including in private gardens – in groups of up to six, or as two households.

The stay-at-home rule has ended, although the government has asked that people ‘minimise travel’; holidays are still not allowed.

Outdoor sport facilities have started to reopen, including golf courses, tennis and basketball courts, and outdoor swimming.

Meanwhile, formally organised outdoor sports like community football, have been allowed to resume.

And weddings can take place, attended by up to six people.

Non-essential stores are, however, still closed. As are pubs and restaurants – although takeaway food is permitted.

When is the next phase of the lockdown easing going to take place?

The next phase of rule easing is due to take place no earlier than April 15.

This will see all shops being allowed to open, along with close-contact services, including hairdressers and beauty salons.

Restaurants and pubs will be allowed to serve food and alcohol to customers sitting outdoors.

And gyms and spas can reopen, as can zoos, theme parks, libraries and community centres.

Members of the same household can take a ‘staycation’ holiday in England in self-contained accommodation.

Wedding ceremonies can also increase in size, with up to 15 people allowed to attend.
