Hazy Sunday afternoon in the city of yesteryear

Charlotte Street, Portsmouth

Charlotte Street, Portsmouth

Here’s an image you would not see today – a deserted Portsmouth city centre on a Sunday afternoon.

You would also not see it because these street scenes do not exist any more.

They were swept away on the tide of progress which roared through the heart of Portsmouth in the 1980s and ’90s.

John Woods, of Reginald Road, Southsea, took these two pictures from the old Tricorn building in Market Way.

They show Charlotte Street (main picture) and the old Moore’s Square area of Landport before the Cascades shopping centre was built.

John recalls that he took them on a Sunday afternoon long before the Sunday trading laws changed to give the seven-day shopping experience.

He does not give a date, but judging by the age of the cars it looks at though it might have been the early 1970s.
