Sian Smith, from Gosport, has told The News about a 50-minute wait to get out of the car park in Newgate Lane.

She said: ‘It was awful trying to get out.

‘I only popped in for a few things but it was utter chaotic trying to get out and I was stuck there for 50 minutes.

People could not even get back to their own cars due to the sheer number of cars in the road trying to get out.

‘I have a three-year-old girl in the car with me and I cannot imagine what it would have been like had I had a baby.’

Drivers had been warned earlier this week that traffic around the area would be congested due to the open day at nearby HMS Collingwood.

Construction is currently underway on a new road called Newgate Lane South to be built to the left of the current road, which is hoped to relive some of the traffic along the congested route.
