THE chief executive of Portsmouth-based UK National Defence Association has welcomed the news that the UK will leave the European Union.

Andy Smith from UKNDA, a military campaign group, has supported Brexit and called this morning’s EU referendum result a triumph.

He said: ‘We welcome the result of the referendum on EU membership, which is a great triumph for British democracy.

‘Despite the scaremongering propaganda of “Project Fear”, the truth is that a sovereign, independent Britain outside the EU will be safe and secure in the world as long as we invest sufficiently in our national defence and security.

‘We need to provide our armed forces and our security and intelligence services with the resources that they need.

‘We also need to continue to work with other western democracies for a strong Nato.’
