Calls for more dog bins and collections in Portsmouth

Following criticism that the bins are not emptied frequently enough, a council spokesman said the bins were most likely being filled with rubbish rather than dog waste.

It comes after The News readers called on the council to do more to prevent the bins from filling up to fast.

Possible solutions have included putting in extra bins around the city or emptying them more often.

A picture of an overflowing bin at Fort Cumberland near Southsea was sent in earlier this week, with readers giving their view on our Facebook page.

Paul Smith commented: ‘More bins required. As stated elsewhere you can sometimes take your dog for a walk and only see one poo bin on the entire walk.’

Sean Allen suggested that bigger bins should be put in, adding: ‘People should not be afraid to report the dog owners that don’t put their dog poop in the bin.’

And Nikki Mills said: ‘There’s not enough in Southsea. On the walk to school in the morning I only pass one and that’s on the opposite side of the road we walk on.’

But Emma Hannay called on dog walkers to do more, saying: ‘Why not just call the council and tell them! How are they to know it needs emptying?’

Amy Yates said: ‘I know it’s an eyesore, but is no one happy that people are still putting the poop by the bin in bags? They could just think the bins are full and put it anywhere.

‘As said before, organised mess is better than a path full of poop.’

A city council spokesman said there were 821 dog bins in Portsmouth, in addition to 750 general litter bins.

The dog bins are emptied by contractors three times a week while the general bins are emptied daily.
