CCTV images have been released of a man wanted in connection with a pickaxe robbery in North End on Saturday night.

A man approached the till at the Co-op store in London Road at around 9.30pm brandishing a small pickaxe and made threats to the cashier before grabbing around £300 from the till and then damaging the store’s landline phone.

The man has been described as white, slim, around 6ft 2ins tall and had a light grey scarf-type garment covering his head and the lower part of his face. He was also wearing mismatched gloves, black trainers, a black T-shirt with a distinctive design on the front and was carrying a black rucksack on his back.

Officers have released the CCTV images of a man who could help with their investigation and are calling on the public to help identify him.

Detective Constable Michael Strangeway said: ‘We would like to speak to anyone who attended this store between 9pm and 9.35pm.’

‘We’d like to know if you saw anyone matching the description of the offender, either inside or outside the store, or whether you saw anyone acting suspiciously.

‘In addition, we are also appealing to anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV images. If you have any information, call police on 101, quoting 44170073439.’
