WORK to upgrade the engines of the Royal Navy’s most advanced warships will begin in early 2018, a defence minister has said.

For years, the navy’s fleet of six Type 45 air defence destroyers have been plagued by propulsion and power woes.

The Ministry of Defence has promised to carry out a rolling set of improvements on the Portsmouth-based vessels.

Now, defence procurement minister Harriett Baldwin confirmed the ‘power improvement project’ will begin in ‘early 2018’. The statement was made following a question by Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond.
