Pompey’s assistant manager said: ‘It’s important picking up results at this time of the year, it’s a cliché I know, but you have to concentrate on yourself.

‘You are going to places around the country now where there’s a lot to play for, whether it’s promotion, play-offs, relegation, people want to finish the season well and Hartlepool are no different.

‘They gave a good account of themselves today, I thought going forward they were excellent, and we had to be switched on for every minute of the game.

‘It’s a great bit of link-up play down the left for Kal’s opener.

‘When you watch it back it’s not an easy finish, it came at quite an awkward height, he’s had to guide it to the far corner.

‘Kal is coming to the front at the minute and is confident in his own ability.’
