POMPEY LADIES were beaten 3-1 at home by C&K Basildon on Sunday.
Samantha Quayle netted for the Blues but it wasn’t enough to get a point in a hard-fought match at Privett Park.
Pompey Ladies suffered an early blow when they conceded after just two minutes.
Sara Sinclair got the goal when she netted on two minutes after a quick forward break from the visitors.
Recent Blues arrival Kate Natkiel almost managed to level the score as the home side pushed hard.
She was denied by an excellent save from the Basildon keeper.
Sarah Kempson was in lively form for the hosts and created several chances, as well as going close herself.
But right on half-time Basildon struck a crucial second goal.
Zoe Rushen broke clear and slid her shot into the net off the far post.
To their credit, Pompey came out strongly for the second half.
Katie James, Gemma Hillier and Kempson were all lively, causing lots of problems for the Basildon defence.
On 63 minutes the hosts found a way back into the game.
Quayle beat three Basildon defenders with a powerful run and then finished well to cut the deficit in half.
Charlotte Benson and Shannon Sievwright went close to equalising as Pompey stepped up the pressure.
Hillier then just failed to connect cleanly when well positioned.
It seemed like the equaliser was inevitable.
Kempson saw her free-kick well saved by the Basildon keeper.
And Natkiel was next to be denied when her well-hit shot was also thwarted by a great save.
After all their efforts to try to get back into the match the Blues were then hit by a late Basildon goal.
Stacey Little found the back of the net six minutes into injury time.
On Sunday the Blues host Cambridge United in the league cup at Privett Park.
