100 in 100 campaign: Gallery benefits from funding for apprenticeships

The 100 in 100 campaign offers the opportunity to hire a government-funded, temporary Kickstart employee or a more permanent apprentice, for which many incentives and grants are available.

A smaller employer hiring an apprentice could be eligible for fully-funded apprenticeship training and up to £4,000.

The Solent Apprenticeship Hub – a free, impartial resource for employers of all sizes – is offering advice for those thinking of taking on a Kickstarter or an apprentice.

The hub has helped hundreds of small organisations across the Solent region and it also runs the Transfer to Transform initiative, which offers SMEs the opportunity to have apprenticeship training fully-funded.

The initiative has been of enormous help to a number of Portsmouth-based small businesses including Aspex Gallery, J Robbins and Son and Blue Reef aquarium.

A spokesperson from the Aspex Gallery, an art gallery at Gunwharf Quays, said: ‘The levy transfer is of enormous benefit to organisations such as ourselves – as a small registered charity the opportunity to benefit from the levy and cover the cost of the training and development of a member of the team is something we are extremely grateful for.

‘Not only does it support the potential of the individual team member but also provides such benefit to the organisation as our skills set is broadened.’

There is further hope for apprenticeships, as the the government has also launched a consultation this week seeking views on how new flexi-job apprenticeship schemes could be run.

Apprenticeships are at least 12 months long, so some sectors with flexible employment patterns and short-term roles, such as agriculture, construction and creative sectors including TV, film and theatre production, have found it challenging to create enough opportunities.

The new flexi-job apprenticeship schemes would enable an apprentice to work across a range of projects and with different employers to gain the full skills and experience they need to complete their programme. This could include film, TV and theatre production, with one apprentice now being able to work on different productions during their apprenticeship.

In July employers will be invited to bid for a share of a £7m fund to create and test new flexi-apprenticeships schemes, with the first expected to start in January 2022.

The 100 in 100 campaign was launched in February with the aim of securing 100 opportunities for young people in Portsmouth within 100 days.

Eight weeks after it was launched, it has smashed through that target with an incredible 101 places found in just 50 days. It now aims to reach 250 placements.

Shaping Portsmouth

No matter what your age, your career options should not be a hidden secret but something you can get access to and experience readily. This programme aims to give our people that opportunity and, whilst some of the placements are age-limited, some are not. Opportunity is for everyone and Shaping and our partners aim to make that happen with this and following programmes.'

Placement types

:: Apprenticeships – combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice you'll be an employee earning a wage and getting holiday pay. Work alongside experienced staff and gain job-specific skills.

:: Traineeships – a course with work experience that gets you ready for work or an apprenticeship. It can last from six weeks up to one year, though most traineeships last for less than six months. You can apply if you're eligible to work in England, unemployed and have little or no work experience.

:: T-level paid placements – new courses which follow GCSEs and are equivalent to three A-levels. These two-year courses, which launched in September 2020, have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work, further training or study. T-levels offer students a mixture of classroom learning and 'on-the-job' experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days).

:: Internships – a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment. Can be paid or unpaid.

:: Work experience (fewer than 70 hours) – enables young, unemployed people to volunteer for placements lasting between two and eight weeks.

:: Kickstarters – the government's Kickstart Scheme provides funding to create new job placements for 16 to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit who are at risk of long-term unemployment.
