Aldi says it's coming and creating 25 jobs

THE construction of a new Aldi supermarket in Portsmouth is progressing well, according to the firm.

Discount supermarket Aldi won planning permission last year to build a store on the former Paulsgrove Industrial Park, in Southampton Road, North Harbour.

The land has since been cleared and hoardings have been put up.

An Aldi spokesperson said: ‘Construction of our North Harbour store is progressing well and we look forward to opening this winter.

‘The new store will create up to 25 new jobs. We will keep the local community updated on developments.’

The update comes as work begins on empty land opposite the site, next to Tesco Extra in Binnacle Way, to create a £16.2m retail park, which will see eight stores and a gym built. It is expected to be completed next spring.

The first nine tenants are; Decathalon, Subway, Costa, Greggs, Pure Gym, Home Bargains, Jollyes pet superstore, Explore Learning and Quality Pet Care.

The development will be built by Simons Group and owned by Portsmouth City Council.

The Portsmouth Retail Park investment will be added to the council’s expanding property investment portfolio which already includes 10 commercial assets, generating £4.3m of profit a year that funds local services.

The council said that more property purchases were set to be made in the coming months.
