Bar + Block has officially opened in Portsmouth

Bar + Block Steakhouse has officially opened in Queen Street, Portsmouth on Monday, March 9.

It is open for breakfast lunch and dinner, as well as drinks and will be open until late at the weekend.

There will be an all-you-can-eat breakfast option for hungry diners, as well as an express lunch service, offering a meal for £10 in 10 minutes from midday until 5pm, for those in a rush.

Half price cocktails will be served from Monday until Thursday from 5pm until 7pm.

The restaurant focuses on premium cuts of steak, with sizes ranging from 8oz up to 140oz.

It also has rotating specials from the Butcher’s Block, grazing plates and handmade burgers prepared on-site using prime beef, as well as a wide selection of drinks, with a focus on craft beers, specially curated wines and innovative cocktails with seasonal specials.

General manager, Sunny Legg said: ‘It feels really good to be open. Portsmouth has been needing a good steak house for the last couple of years.’

Staff at the restaurant are expecting a busy first week, with almost all of their tables booked up for Saturday.

FOOD REVIEW: Bar + Block, Whiteley Shopping Centre

Owned by Whitbread, it is the 14th Bar + Block restaurant in the UK, with the closest in Whiteley Shopping Centre.

The 165-cover restaurant is next to the Portsmouth Dockyard Hotel, Premier Inn, which is also owned by Whitbread.

The restaurant has around 40 members of staff, with some coming from the existing Whiteley branch, but around 20 being sourced from JobCentre Plus.

Sunny said: ‘It is about linking with the community and giving something back. It is important to give opportunities to people that don’t usually get the opportunity.’

Joanna Spencer, senior brand and marketing manager from Whitbread Restaurants said: ‘Situated in a prime city location in close vicinity to the popular Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, we are looking forward to expanding the Bar + Block brand in Portsmouth, which will be our 14th site and our first opening in 2020.’
