Southern Railway has set up four new recycling partnerships with charities that will restore bikes abandoned on the railway across the south, including between Havant and Chichester.

Every month Southern will donate up to 30 abandoned and unclaimed bikes to each charity in turn.

The company has already delivered two batches of 25 bikes, one to the Sussex Community Development Association in Newhaven, and the other to Chichester-based Stonepillow.

Stonepillow will refurbish and sell the bikes to fund its work supporting homeless people. SCDA will also sell the renovated bikes to raise funds.

Southern’s next delivery will be to Cycling UK’s Brixton workshop, which helps people on low incomes, and then to Hove-based YMCA DownsLink.

Angie Doll, from Southern, said: ‘It’s fantastic to be working not only to promote healthy, green transport by extending the life of previously unwanted bikes, but to support these charities who are providing truly life-changing support.’
