Superdrug will launch a new store on Thursday in Commercial Road, Portsmouth, in the wake of a controversial plan to redevelop a shopping site in Arundel Street, in Landport, into a part seven-storey, part 21-storey and part 28-storey tower block – a development put forward by Fusion Students.

The proposals, which involve knocking down a row of shops along the street, one of which was the former Superdrug store, in place of 589 student homes, have received a number of objections from residents.

Frustrated shopkeepers in Arundel Street also backed a petition against the development, which was signed over 200 times.

The store’s move to Commercial Road will create 12 new jobs and offer customers further access to the store’s health and beauty products, toiletries, beauty treatments and luxury fragrances.

The new store, open Monday to Sunday from 8.30am to 6pm, will also feature its very own Beauty Studio area where customers can access professional treatments including eyebrow, lashes, piercing and nail services.

Nigel Duxbury, property director at Superdrug, said ‘We are so pleased to be announcing the re-opening of a new store in Portsmouth, meaning we will have continued representation within this city. With a wide range of popular health and beauty brands, a luxury fragrance counter, and a professional Beauty Studio, we’re confident that our local customers will love and welcome the new store.’
