Lidl has revealed its ‘wish list’ for new stores after welcoming a record number of shoppers to its locations in 2022. The German discounter was recently named as the fastest growing supermarket after it reported a rise in sales of 26 per cent.
Some current supermarkets are set to close, including the location in London Road, Cowplain – which was deemed ‘no longer fit for purpose’. That location is set to close on May 28 but Lidl is also looking to relocate many of its supermarkets as well as launch new ones.

Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB CEO, said: ‘The last few years have been challenging for everyone, but we’ve made it clear that we’re more committed than ever to ensuring that every single household has access to a Lidl store.

‘That’s why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country.’ Lidl has released a document outlining their expansion intentions and are hunting for suitable locations – giving each area a key number.
These areas include central and west Portsmouth (42), Drayton (41), Emsworth (18), north Fareham (20) and Segensworth (21). Lidl plans to relocate two sites – London Road, Cowplain (14), and the current store in Fareham (19).
The discounters are currently battling it out for supremacy, as rival Aldi also has new stores on its mind – with a new store opening soon in The Pompey Centre in Fratton, a stones throw away from the Lidl in Goldsmith Avenue. Mr McDonnell said the business has received over 1.4million new shoppers from their competitors over the course of last year.
