But with refurbishment work starting this month, Sainsbury’s is also starting a click and collect service at the store ahead of its reopening, starting from September 13.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s property director, said: ‘We’ve been pleased by the warm welcome from local people since we announced our plans to open a new Neighbourhood Hub store in Bishop’s Waltham.

‘We’re committed to minimising disruption to residents and customers as we embark on this exciting upgrade and thank everyone for their understanding as we refurbish the store.’

In 2015, the firm pulled out of a bid for a supermarket in Abbey Mill, following a six-year battle with residents from the market town.

The click and collect slots will be available from September 9, allowing nearby residents to order groceries online and collect them in the car park outside.

Next-day delivery will be available for orders made before 11pm and the service is free for orders over £40.

A cost of £4 will be added to all orders below £40.

Residents will also be able to use the online or assisted shopping scheme to get what they need.

Once open, the store will feature an Argos collection point, like many of the chain’s larger supermarkets.

Refurbishment work is due to begin on Monday.
