Proposals for new garden features at the Churchillian pub in Portsdown Hill Road, are due to be decided at a Portsmouth City Council planning committee next week.

If approved the changes will include the construction of an outside bar with a rear or side terrace and fencing, the installation of a pergola in the front garden and extra seating and tables.

A report to be considered by the planning committee said: 'The application proposes alterations to the existing external seating area, and proposes to enlarge this area.

'There would be the addition of six new tables, to match the existing one by the main entrance, and five to the east of the pub itself and within the existing layout of furniture.

'Within the existing established external seating area the application proposes the addition of seating and a pergola.

'The outdoor bar would have a mono-pitched roof, sloping towards the neighbouring site's boundary to the south/east. This would measure approximately 2.4 metres in height at highest point, and would be constructed of painted steel beams.'

No objections to the plans have been submitted by residents, however, the construction could be affected by the current lockdown.

A spokeswoman for Stonegate Group, which runs the pub, said: 'An investment scheme was proposed last spring and an application for planning made.

'Should planning be granted we will be reviewing our timescales for completion bearing in mind the current lockdown and economic circumstances.'

Councillors will decide on the plans during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, February 23.
