The drive-thru in the Pompey Centre is one of a number of sites across Portsmouth and the surrounding areas that have been opened today.

Footage from the McDonald’s in Fratton shows the queue of cars extending back into the B&Q car park.

Google Traffic Map shows that there is heavy traffic on Goldsmith Avenue heading towards the Pompey Centre.

Heavy traffic in Portsmouth as McDonald's reopens drive-thru restaurants

Traffic is also being reported around the areas of other reopened McDonald’s restaurants including in Cosham and North Harbour.

Portsmouth Roads tweeted: ‘Following re-opening of several McDonalds drive-thrus in Portsmouth today, there is localised congestion and delays around sites at Fratton Way, Ocean Retail Park, Cosham and North Harbour.

‘Please avoid these areas if possible.’

McDonald’s has announced that there will be a number of safety measures in place for people going to McDonald’s drive-thru restaurants.

In a post on social media, the company wrote: ‘In order to allow for social distancing, we will have fewer employees in our kitchen and service areas.

‘To help our smaller teams, we will be offering a limited menu over reduced hours (11am to 10pm).

‘We continue to ask that you limit your spend to £25 and use contactless payment methods wherever possible.

‘Our teams are adjusting to new safety and hygiene procedures, which will help them to work safely and social distance, we appreciate your continued patience.

‘We are delighted to be returning to communities across the UK and Ireland, but it will look different and take a little longer. Please bear with us.’

The remaining drive-thru restaurants will reopen tomorrow, McDonald’s has said.
