Craft Coffee House in Gosport gets food hygiene rating of two

Issues found at high street coffee shop

A high street coffee shop has received a food hygiene rating of two after food was found past its due by date, including one item which was nearly a month out of date.

Craft Coffee House in Gosport High Street had an inspection on October 7 with inspectors flagging issues with its cleanliness and how it stored ready-to-eat and raw food together. Concerns were also raised regarding the temperature checks of cooked food with some bacon and sausages appearing “very pale in colour and pink in places as if they were undercooked”.

The Food Standards Agency judge eateries in three areas; hygienic food handling; cleanliness and condition of facilities and building; and management of food safety. The coffee house’ hygienic food handling and cleanliness of facilities was rated as ‘improvement necessary’ while its management of food safety was ‘generally satisfactory’.

One of the concerns highlighted was the discovery of products on site that had surpassed the use by date.

The report stated: “Creme fraiche was found on your premises which was beyond its use by date of September 21. The hummus had a use by date of September 9. The use-by date is the date until which the manufacturer of the food guarantees it is safe to eat.  Food sold beyond its use-by date may be of poor quality or unfit. It is an offence to sell or expose for sale food with an expired use by date.”

It was noted in the report that food stock was not being “effectively rotated” with food remaining in storage beyond its shelf-life.

The separation of raw and ready to eat food was also listed as a concern with lettuce and bacon were stored next to each other in the fridge while frozen baguettes and a box raw burgers were next t each other in the freezer. Food inspectors state that there is a risk of cross contamination and should be stores apart from each other with ready to eat food above raw items.

Inspectors also called into question if some food were undercooked. The report stated: “The cooked bacon and sausages appeared to be very pale in colour and pink in places as if they were under cooked. There are no temperature checks being recorded to prove that they reached the required temperature of 75 ̊c.”

Further issues were highlighted including a “generally poor” standard of cleaning to the structure of the kitchen and the lack of temperature records for the fridge and freezer.

Craft Coffee House had 21-days to appeal against the rating before it was released. The hygiene rating can be found at https://ratings.food.gov.uk/business/627581/craft-coffee-house.
