Mr Hurley signed copies and spoke about how he made Portsmouth the star of a series of novels featuring DI Joe Faraday and DC Paul Winter.

Former city resident Mr Hurley drew heavily on Portsmouth as the gritty backdrop to his long-running series.

He switched from writing international thrillers to crime novels on the advice of his publisher, which proved fruitful, as the Faraday series ran to 12 novels, and was followed by a spin-off series set in the West Country.
